A Classic Born Anew

Originally designed in 1968 by famed Los Angeles modernist architect Craig Ellwood, 777 Aviation is a newly reimagined and renovated 318,182 square-foot, 3-story, glass and steel structure. A true classic reborn! Come enjoy the past, present and your remarkable future.

the atrium

The newly enlarged Atrium has been transformed from a place people pass through to an area that entices people to stay awhile. The central area includes large stadium seating from the ground floor to the second floor to allow for small groups to congregate for work or leisure. Small tables and chairs throughout provide an area for lunch, informal meetings, and working sessions. Skylights allow natural light to filter in. Located off the central atrium are the cafe, the fitness center with locker room and showers, and access to the outdoor collaborative areas.  Wi-Fi is available throughout.

“The essence of architecture is the interrelation and interaction of mass, space, plane and line. The purpose of architecture is to enrich the joy and drama of living. The spirit of architecture is its truthfulness to itself: its clarity and logic with respect to its materials and structure.”

-Craig Ellwood

Historical Significance

Craig Ellwood worked as an architect in Los Angeles from 1949 to 1977, favoring the modernist’s design of even-spatial relationship between horizontal and vertical planes.

He had several famous projects: the Hale House, the Kubly House, the Security Pacific National Bank Building, and one of his final commissions and personal fulfillments, the bridge at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

By the late-1950s Ellwood was a sought-after university lecturer, eventually giving a series of talks at Yale University, and teaching at the University of Southern California and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona’s Department of Architecture.

ELLWOOD + SUGARMAN

Complimenting Craig Ellwood’s iconic building are four sculptures designed by eclectic artist, George Sugarman, called “Yellow to White to Blue and Black.”  Sugarman‘s style for this sculpture set is described as “successive changes in discontinuity, continuity, and development.” It was fabricated in steel in Holland and delivered to 777 Aviation in 1969.
